Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide for a levada walk, or can I go alone?

Many levadas can be walked without a guide, and plenty of visitors do. What a guided tour buys you is the transfer — most trailheads are an hour of mountain road from Funchal and awkward to reach without a car — plus a guide who changes the route when the weather closes in. Some routes also require an entry ticket bought in advance; the operator handles that. If you have a hire car and settled weather, going alone is a real option.

How fit do I need to be?

It varies enormously. A flat levada through laurel forest is a walk anyone comfortable on their feet can do. The Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo traverse is a serious mountain day with a lot of steps and exposure. Every listing states a difficulty level — read it rather than assuming, because the gap between the easiest and hardest routes here is larger than on most islands.

Will the weather ruin it?

Funchal and the mountains have different weather, and that is the single most useful thing to know about Madeira. It can be sunny on the seafront while the peaks sit in cloud all day. This is why guided tours are worth more here than in most places: the guide decides on the morning which route actually works, and switches if needed.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

No, and any operator promising otherwise is overselling. Sightings are common because the water drops away steeply close to shore, but these are wild animals. Many operators offer a free repeat trip rather than a refund if nothing is seen — check which policy applies before booking, they differ.

How far in advance should I book?

In summer and over Christmas and New Year, the popular sunrise transfers and the best-rated levada walks sell out several days ahead. Outside those peaks, a day or two is usually enough. Since almost everything can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, booking early costs you nothing.

What should I bring on a levada walk?

Proper shoes with grip — the paths are often wet and the rock is slippery. A light rain jacket even on a clear morning, because the north side makes its own weather. Water, and a warm layer if the route goes high: at 1,800 metres it can be near freezing while Funchal is mild. Some tunnels need a torch, though guided tours usually supply one.
