Fanal: why fog is the better outcome than sunshine

Most destinations hope for good weather. Fanal is the rare place where you want fog – and not out of contrariness, but because the fog genuinely makes the better picture.

What stands up there

Fanal sits on the north-western edge of the Paúl da Serra plateau, at roughly 1,150 metres, between the Ribeira da Janela gorge and the high ground. Scattered across an open pasture stand individual ancient til trees (Ocotea foetens), known on Madeira simply as til. Estimates for the oldest run to several centuries; five hundred to seven hundred years is the figure usually quoted.

Over that time wind and moisture have twisted, hollowed and bent the trunks into shapes that no longer read as trees. One carries the nickname “witch tree”, because its silhouette suggests a figure with outstretched arms.

The forest itself is a remnant of the laurisilva, the laurel forest that covered large parts of southern Europe and North Africa millions of years ago. On Madeira it survived: around 15,000 hectares, about a fifth of the island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and the largest continuous stand anywhere. Fanal is one of the places where you can look at it without effort.

Why it is so often foggy

Moist Atlantic air rises over the plateau, cools and condenses. At this altitude that happens regularly, often several times a day, and it happens fast: fog can arrive within minutes and clear again just as quickly.

For the forest this is not weather but livelihood. The laurisilva combs moisture straight out of the cloud – water that never falls as rain and still ends up in the ground. From there it feeds, among other things, the levadas. The fog taking away your view is the same fog that irrigates the island.

Why sunshine is the weaker outcome

Under a clear sky, Fanal is a pretty green upland pasture with a few remarkably old trees and grazing cattle. That is nice, but it does not repay an hour and a half of driving across the island.

The fog makes the difference because it separates space. The nearest trees stand out as dark silhouettes, the ones behind fade into layers of grey, the ground stays sharp. That layering is exactly what you see in every Fanal photograph – and exactly what is missing in sunshine, because then everything is equally far away.

But be careful with the reverse: too much fog is no good either. When the cloud sits right on the ground you will not see the trees until you are ten metres away. The ideal is the narrow band in between, and nobody can order that.

Honest planning notes

It is a matter of luck. Some sources recommend early morning, when the mist is often thickest and the tour buses have not arrived. Others say it is simply chance, because conditions can line up at any hour. Both are right. Arriving early buys you quiet – the cloud does not care.

The place does not behave like its surroundings. Five kilometres away the sun can be out while a single cloud hangs over Fanal. The reverse happens just as often. Checking a weather app for “Madeira” does not help here; why, is in our piece on the weather between coast and mountains.

It is cold and wet. At 1,150 metres, in wind and fog, it is noticeably cooler than the coast – in summer too. Jacket and proper shoes; the grass is usually damp.

No public bus goes there. Fanal is reachable only with your own vehicle or on a guided tour. From Funchal it is a half to full day, because it lies on the other side of the island.

The cattle are part of the deal. They graze freely, are used to people and often stand exactly where you wanted the photograph. Keeping your distance is enough.

Walk, or just drive up?

You can see Fanal in twenty minutes – the old trees stand right by the pasture. If you want more:

  • Vereda do Fanal (PR 13), around eleven kilometres, starts up on the Paúl da Serra and leads down through the forest to Fanal. In that direction it is mostly downhill.
  • Levada dos Cedros (PR 14), a good seven kilometres, runs through laurel forest to a waterfall.

For both, the rule that has applied on Madeira since January 2026 to all officially waymarked PR trails holds: a pre-booked ticket with a time slot through the regional authority’s portal. The amounts change, so we quote none – on a guided walk the operator handles it. A ranking by difficulty is in our piece Which levada walk first?

How people usually get there

Fanal is nearly always driven as part of a western circuit, together with Porto Moniz, Seixal and the Cabo Girão skywalk. The current Madeira listing holds 26 offers featuring Fanal from €34.20, with around 26,800 reviews between them. The most-booked of them – a 4x4 circuit taking in the skywalk, Porto Moniz, Seixal and Fanal – alone carries more than 9,500 reviews at 4.9 stars.

One honest caveat: on a circuit like that, Fanal is one stop among several. If you want to wait until the mist sits just right, you need your own vehicle or a private tour.
