Levada do Rei: should you book the transfer or the guided walk?

Updated October 10, 2026 · 5 min read

A narrow levada channel curving through glossy green laurel forest beside a moss-covered rock wall

For most confident walkers: book the PR18 Levada do Rei return transfer. It costs €42, allows 6 hours and leaves you to walk independently after the driver gives basic route information. If you want interpretation and someone leading the way: choose the guided Levada do Rei and Laurissilva walk, €48 for 7 hours. The €6 difference is small; the real decision is independence versus a guide.

What the transfer actually buys

The transfer removes the awkward part of a north-coast hike: getting to PR18 and back without leaving a car at the trailhead. The driver provides basic route information, but this is explicitly a self-guided walk. You choose your pace, decide where to stop and remain responsible for returning to the agreed pickup point on time.

That format suits walkers who can follow a marked route and are comfortable judging their own turnaround time. It is a poor fit if you expect someone to lead, explain the native vegetation or make decisions when weather changes. Six hours is the total activity window, not six hours with a guide beside you.

What the guided day adds

The guided option lasts 7 hours and centres on the Laurissilva forest, native plants, waterfalls and birdlife. That extra hour is less important than having somebody interpret what would otherwise be a green corridor beside the water channel. It also puts someone else in charge of the pace, which some people appreciate and quicker walkers may find restrictive.

Do not pay the extra €6 merely because you assume “guided” means easier. Both products concern the same levada environment; a guide supplies explanation and leadership, not a promise that every surface, drop or weather condition will suit you. Check the booking page for the current meeting point, equipment advice and any operator restrictions before committing.

Who should skip both

Neither option is a sightseeing stop reached straight from Funchal. It is a walking day in Madeira’s damp north-side landscape. If narrow levada paths make you uneasy, if your schedule cannot absorb a delayed return, or if the forecast makes a forest walk unappealing, choose a road-based island tour instead. Families should not infer a minimum age from the route name: the operators set their own limits, shown on the respective booking pages.

Our recommendation

For most experienced holiday walkers, the PR18 Levada do Rei return transfer is the cleaner purchase: transport is the problem it solves, and you keep control of the walk. Book the guided version only when learning about the Laurissilva and having a leader are worth more to you than moving entirely at your own pace.
