Ponta de São Lourenço: which hike transfer or tour is worth booking?
Updated October 7, 2026 · 7 min read
The short answer: for most people, the Caniçal – São Lourenço hike transfer with the permit included (€31). It is the most-booked way to do the PR8, and the permit is the part that catches people out. If you would rather have someone lead, the guided full-day tour of the nature reserve (€48) is the one with a guide. Not a walker? Skip the trail and take the boat.
Five ways to do the eastern tip
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caniçal – São Lourenço hike transfer, permit included | 6 hours | €31 | 4.8 (1,092) | Self-guided walkers who want the permit sorted |
| PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço nature reserve transfer | 4 hours | €32 | 4.8 (744) | Walkers who will buy their own ticket |
| PR8 Caniçal hike, ticket included | 4.5 hours | €32 | 4.9 (96) | A short, ticket-included alternative |
| Full day Ponta de São Lourenço – nature reserve | 6 hours | €48 | 4.8 (115) | Anyone who wants a guide on the trail |
| Ponta de São Lourenço snorkelling boat trip | 2 hours | €35 | 4.8 (268) | People who prefer the sea to the path |
The trail: what you are actually signing up for
The PR8 runs from Baía d’Abra to Casa do Sardinha, officially around four kilometres each way, with two and a half hours allowed – most people take longer. The landscape is bare and wind-shaped, red and ochre rock with the Atlantic on both sides, and not a tree or a shelter along it. Wind is the main risk of the day, and sun if there is any: bring a hat, water and layers.
Since 1 January 2026 every classified trail in Madeira, including the PR8, needs a booking in advance through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. You book a time slot, not just a day. That is why some tours advertise the permit or ticket, and why we point out which ones include it.
The three transfers: same trail, different small print
All three self-guided options take you to the trailhead, let you walk alone and bring you back. The differences are in the booking pages.
The most-booked transfer lists the permit as included. It is a six-hour round trip with a sunrise or late-morning start; pickups are limited to Funchal, Caniço, São Gonçalo, Santa Cruz and Machico, and you must be able to finish the walk within the time provided. Swimming is possible, so bring swimwear, and the page mentions a return by boat for an additional fee. A minimum age for children applies.
The four-hour transfer is the one where you buy your own ticket: its page says the entry costs €4.50 per person and recommends buying it in advance through SIMplifica to secure your slot. A driver gives logistical and safety information before you start. Pickups are from Funchal, Caniço, Machico or Garajau. Children below the age limit or under 1.35 metres are not allowed; bring your own food and drink, and be on time, because the tour leaves without latecomers.
The third has its ticket included and takes four and a half hours, but only 96 people have rated it, so its 4.9 is a small sample.
The guided day: when someone else navigates
The guided tour takes six hours, of which the hike is three and a half, and requires a moderate level of fitness. The page says it runs in rain or shine and can be windy; it advises a hearty breakfast and warns that it may not suit very young children given its length and difficulty. There are no refunds for cancellations within 24 hours of the start. The guide may not speak your language: the page says the tour may be conducted in English.

The boat: the same cliffs without the walk
A two-hour trip by speedboat along the cliffs at Baía d’Abra, with guided snorkelling, a briefing beforehand and life jackets and wetsuits for those who want help with buoyancy. It is a different trip, not a shortcut, but for people who dislike wind and exposed paths it is an easy answer.

Transfer or your own car
If you have a hire car, you can reach the start yourself and pick your own slot, and the cost of the transfer disappears. You still need the SIMplifica booking, and you will want to be back at the car on time. If you are weighing that up, compare hire cars for Madeira here and read Do you need a hire car in Madeira?. If the east is only part of your plan, the full-day tour is described in The East Tour from Funchal.
Who should skip it
Anyone who needs shade. There is none.
Anyone with young children. The two most-booked transfers set a minimum age for children, and the guided tour says the walk may not suit very young children.
Anyone with heart or joint problems. The guided tour says it is not for people with severe health issues or limited mobility; talk to your doctor before you go.
Anyone who wants a gentle hour. The headland is a proper walk.
Our recommendation
For most people: the Caniçal – São Lourenço transfer with the permit included, €31. It is the cheapest of the three transfers, by far the most reviewed, and one of two that include the permit or ticket in the price.

If you want a guide: the guided full-day tour, €48. It costs €17 more than the main transfer, and what you pay for is the guide.
If you prefer the water: the snorkelling boat trip, €35.
When the extra cost is not worth it: if your only wish is the view, the viewpoint stop on the east tour gives you a look at the headland without the walk, and the boat gives you the cliffs.
