Pico do Arieiro at sunrise: which tour should you book?
Updated October 7, 2026 · 7 min read
The short answer: two kinds of sunrise tour share the same name, and they are different days. If you want to watch the light come up and be back in Funchal for breakfast, book the three-hour sunrise trip with optional breakfast (€35). If you want to walk the ridge to Pico Ruivo afterwards, book a hiking transfer instead – the most booked is the Pico do Arieiro sunrise hiking transfer, and it is a hiking day, not a viewpoint stop.
Five sunrise tours, side by side
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pico Arieiro sunrise with optional breakfast | 3 hours | €35 | 4.7 (1,320) | Anyone who wants the view, not the hike |
| Pico do Arieiro sunrise hiking transfer | 8h 30m | €49 | 4.8 (4,813) | Confident walkers who want the ridge path without a guide |
| Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo sunrise or morning hike transfers | 8 hours | €32 | 4.8 (1,456) | Walkers who want the cheapest way to the trailhead and a lift home |
| Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro and the Larano Trail | 7 hours | €45 | 4.8 (1,243) | People who want a hike and a viewpoint stop in one morning |
| Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour and Balcões walk | 3h 30m | €46 | 4.9 (174) | A short, easy walk after the sunrise |
The sunrise trip: you see it, you don’t hike it
The three-hour trip with optional breakfast comes in three versions, and the booking page is blunt about the differences. Basic is transport only from designated pickup points, with no rescheduling. Standard is transport only, with pickup and drop-off inside defined areas. Premium adds breakfast and a levada walk in Paradise Valley near Camacha afterwards – but only Tuesday to Saturday, and only if conditions are safe. None of the three is the ridge hike: the page says in so many words that this experience is not the PR1 from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo.
What decides whether you enjoy it is the second paragraph of the small print. If conditions at the summit are poor, the operator may use an alternative viewpoint, and the page states that bad weather, limited visibility or a different viewpoint do not automatically qualify for a refund as long as the trip runs. That is fair enough – nobody can order a clear sky – but you should know it before you set an alarm for the middle of the night.

The hiking transfers: a lift, not a tour
The two cheapest options in the table are transfers, and the word “self-guided” means exactly that. A driver takes you from your hotel to the start of the trail and collects you at the end; nobody walks with you. On the most-booked one, pickups are limited to Funchal, Caniço and São Gonçalo, the hike is a round trip you must finish within the time provided, and a mandatory IFCN ticket – the hiking fee – is required. The operator says it assists with permits on request, so ask whether the ticket is already in the price.
Since 1 January 2026 every classified trail needs a time slot booked in advance through SIMplifica, so check who arranges that before you pay. The ridge itself is the hardest day of walking on the island: tunnels without lighting, exposed stretches, a long climb back up. We describe it in From Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, and it is worth reading before you choose a version without a guide. Both transfers on the list set a minimum age for children; check it before booking with a family.
The €32 version is the cheapest way to the same trailhead: transfer from Funchal or Caniço, hike to Pico Ruivo at your own pace, driver waiting at the end. The €17 difference to the more popular one is not explained by the walk itself, so compare what each operator says about pickup areas, pickup times and tickets before you decide.

Two in-between options
If the full ridge sounds like too much and a viewpoint alone too little, two tours sit in the middle. The Larano Trail tour combines the sunrise, a glass platform and a 7 km walk, with hotel pickup and drop-off, over seven hours. The Balcões tour is gentler: a sunrise drive to the summit and then a walk through the scenery, in three and a half hours. The Balcões lookout itself is a short, level levada path that needs no special fitness.
The Balcões tour has far fewer reviews than the others, so its 4.9 stars rest on a smaller sample.
Sunrise is a bet – at 1,818 metres
The famous sea of clouds is a picture, not a promise. In the morning it can sit below you, around you or not at all, and Funchal’s weather tells you almost nothing about it; we explain why in Sun in Funchal, fog up top. A local operator that turns the route around on the day is worth more than the cheapest transfer – with a transfer, you decide alone at the car park.
Dress for the summit, not for the seafront. The booking pages ask for warm clothing, and that is meant seriously: pickup is long before dawn and you will stand still in the wind. Families will find the details in Pico do Areeiro with kids; the sunset trip is the easier version of the same idea.
Who should skip it
Anyone who dislikes very early starts. Pickup is in the middle of the night, and the day afterwards is slow.
Anyone who wants a guarantee. There isn’t one, and the refund rules above are the proof.
Anyone with heart or circulation problems who is thinking of the ridge. Talk to your doctor before you book the hike, not after.
We deliberately give no age limit for the viewpoint trips: operators set different ones, and the one on the booking page applies.
Our recommendation
For most people: the three-hour sunrise trip with optional breakfast, €35. It is the only one on the list that asks nothing of your legs, and the Premium version turns the early start into a proper morning.

For fit walkers who want the ridge: the sunrise hiking transfer, €49, 4,813 reviews. Book it for the trail, not for the sunrise – at that hour you will be on the path.
For a first mountain morning with some walking: the Larano Trail tour, €45, in seven hours.
When the extra cost is not worth it: if the forecast says cloud over the whole mountain, move the trip to another day or take the sunset version. All early-morning and late-afternoon trips are listed under sunrise and sunset tours.
